[ Oh.

Somehow, despite all the signs pointing straight to this, Chris can't help but be surprised to hear Loki say those three little words, one syllable each, yet so very powerful nonetheless.

Part of him feels like this is moving too fast. They've not really spent all that much time together, not in the grand scheme of things, and yet what time they do spend together they're wholly wrapped up in each other. Is quality of time spent together more important than quantity of time?

Chris thinks about how his heart swells when Loki turns to him for comfort, when he demonstrates the trust he has in Chris to make him feel better, when he tells him a secret or explains something personal and shows off what his magic can do. He thinks of him bringing his son here to Chris's home — in this case, his son is a massive eight-legged stallion, but whatever — thinks of him curled up in his lap as a little orange fox, thinks of his pout when Chris scolded him and of his blushing smile when he praised him. All these things, all these details, all indelibly etched into his heart.

He thinks of the less than a decade he has left to him before his life is irrevocably changed. Maybe it is moving too fast, but Chris doesn't have a lot of time left. Who cares if it's too fast? It doesn't feel wrong.

On the contrary, it feels inevitable, inescapable, preordained. Some sort of cosmic payback for the fact that his life will be cut short all too soon.

Smiling, he turns his head in towards Loki's, nuzzling at his hairline and pressing a little kiss to his temple. ]

I love you too.
